Become an innovation booster. Submit your car app idea today. Bastian, Phil, and Matthias from the BMW Innovation Team, in cooperation with Startnext, are offering you the once-in-a-lifetime chance to support our team by submitting your wild, futuristic ideas and becoming part of the innovation process.
It's easy! Just like with a crowdfunding project, you present your idea and build a campaign. With a good idea and a little bit of elbow grease, you can convince your fans to support your virtual crowdfunding campaign. The winners will receive prize money and the opportunity to visit our innovation teams in Mountain View (USA) or Munich (Germany) and get exciting first hand experiences and insights.
Your project pitch is your calling card. There's not a second to lose.
1st place: 1.500 USD
2nd place: 500 USD
3rd place: 500 USD
The 10 highest funded app ideas will be presented to the BMW App Jury for final evaluation and the selection of three winning submissions. With a good idea, a lot of community support and a little bit of luck, your idea could be the next app to be implemented in BMW cars.
This crowdfunding campaign is led by Bastian, Phil, and Matthias from BMW's Innovation Team in Munich (Germany) and Mountain View (USA). It is their passion to find the best ideas and then work together with creators to bring these ideas to life at BMW. Engineers and creative minds always work hard at BMW to do more than merely making cars that work.
We want cars to be recognized as an integral part of a person's lifestyle. We want to share this passion with you and open up for your ideas. Our goal is to do the impossible by breaking down traditional barriers between companies and the public. Let’s open doors together!
Besides our prize of USD 2.500 the best minds in this competition will have the chance to present their ideas to the BMW App Jury. This jury is the final committee to determine which apps eventually make it into the car. And your idea could make it – you can become an innovation booster.
The team from Startnext in Berlin is helping to get this crazy initiative off the ground. Startnext is for Germany what Kickstarter is for the United States: A platform where creative ideas are presented and funded. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us via the Contact Form.
Bastian Bansemir studied at the Technical University Munich and got his PhD at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg in the field of information systems. At BMW, he is responsible for the innovation management at the IT department. His interests cycle around Open Innovation, Crowd Funding, and Innovation Communities.
To submit an idea for the Mobility Experience Challenge you need to be registered on Startnext and logged in.
App developers, mobility experts, innovators or fans of BMW, Mini or Rolls-Royce are certainly natural participants. However, anyone who has a good idea and is able to turn this idea into reality is free to enter the contest.
If you are willing and able to develop the app yourself – awesome! If not, that's no problem. Once your idea has been accepted, BMW will have an in-depth conversation with you on how to proceed.
There is no limitation on the number of entries per person as long as each idea is of a high level of quality.
Even though we appreciate ideas that focus on the categories 'car,' 'travel' and 'search & scout,' there are no content-based limitations. However, for the unlikely event that creators submit apps containing offensive material or copyrights issues, we reserve the right to decline to publish the app or to remove an existing idea from our website.
Every registered user on startnext.com can support an app idea. If you find an idea particularly appealing, you may want to help it gain some extra publicity. Share it with family, friends and colleagues and perhaps you will help to make someone famous!
We give each user USD 100 of virtual money. You may put the entire sum toward one app idea or distribute it among several ideas that you would like to support. The amount you spend is an important indicator for the creator when it comes to gauging the appeal of his or her app. Please note: No 'real' money will be transferred at any point.
The top 10 finalists by public voting will receive certificates to acknowledge their success in the Mobility Experience Challenge.
The 3 winning entries - determined by the BMW App Jury - will be awarded USD 1,500 (1st place) and USD 500 (2nd and 3rd place, each). The winners also receive a chance to visit the innovation team in Mountain View, California (USA) or Munich (Germany).
This is not a marketing campaign. We are searching for good ideas with the ultimate goal of working together with you to implement these apps at a later stage. As described above, the process of turning an idea into a final, implemented app involves several stages. If you are able to work together with us to complete these steps, you may indeed see one of your ideas in a BMW. However, we cannot promise to implement your ideas. Our promise is to present the best ideas to our expert jury, which will then make the final decision about apps in every stage of the process.
Please note that BMW selects apps solely based on public decision.
You will retain the rights to your idea. We reserve the right to publish your idea for internal use as well as in public communications, including press releases, websites, blogs and social media posts.
However, please keep in mind that BMW is also working on a number of its own app ideas and that we already have many apps slated for release. Unfortunately, we will not be able to discuss our ideas before these apps are officially released.
As you know, BMW has a large team working to implement new apps. But we're sure that there are plenty of creative minds and developers out there who have what it takes to make our jaws drop. And those are exactly the people we're looking for.
Our development centers are subject to a strict level of confidentiality. For this reason, we are not able to share information with you about the ideas we are currently developing. And the fact is, we might already be working on some of the ideas you submit. However, we will not be able to tell you whether or not this is the case. This is normal for companies, but it certainly doesn't feel good. Our team promises that it will never copy new, unique ideas. That's why we want to give the winner a chance to pitch their idea directly to our board. If we decide to develop an idea, we will sign an exclusive contract with you to ensure that your idea is extremely well protected.
When creating your campaign, always make sure that your idea and all of the important aspects are clear in your pitch. You can omit details about the solutions you have used to ensure that your idea is protected. The most important thing is to gather together as many fans as possible so that you can generate enough virtual support for your campaign. Your pitch is your calling card. You can trust us, Bastian and Matthias.

Over the course of the different stages of the process – from the idea to the implementation – many different measures must be taken into account. We will support third party developers in this process to ensure quality, usability and safety.
This initiative is a joint effort between several departments at BMW. Bastian Bansemir is responsible for the IT aspects ans Matthias Meyer supports the process with his knowledge in the area of product development.

The Mobility Experience Challenge is a cooperation between Startnext and BMW in the form of an innovation contest. Participants may submit their ideas for BMW car apps. These ideas will be presented to the public on bmw.startnext.com. Following a public voting process, participants may be given the opportunity to present their app idea to BMW.
2. Target groups
This campaign addresses the following target groups: app developers, mobility experts, innovators or fans of BMW.
Users can participate by submitting their idea on the "Submit Idea" page. The Guidelines of Startnext must be fulfilled and General Terms & Conditions must be acknowledged by each participant.
3. How it works
Step 1: Registration
To participate, users are required to register at Startnext.com. Registration is free of charge.
Step 2: Submissions
App ideas can be submitted via the 'Submit Idea' button on our homepage. All required details must be provided via the user interface. The entry is complete when the idea has been submitted for approval. All submitted ideas will be reviewed for compliance (with Campaign Guidelines and Startnext Guidelines) by the 'Mobility Experience Challenge Team' and the 'Startnext Project Team'. BMW and Startnext reserve the right to reject ideas at any time if these ideas do not comply with contest guidelines.
Step 3: Public Voting
In this step, ideas are activated for public voting. Third parties can support their favourite ideas using virtual money. Each supporter will be given a virtual budget of $100, which he or she can split into units of $5 to support participating projects. This virtual funding is treated like a voting process. Ideas that earn the most virtual money will win the public contest.
Participation in this contest (as a creator as well as a supporter) is free of charge. No 'real' currency will be used.
4. Duration of contest
Submissions can be entered starting on July 8, 2014 at 15:00 (CEST) and ending on September 1, 2014 at 23:59 (CEST). All ideas that have been entered, fully completed and successfully reviewed by the Startnext Team within this Submission Phase, will be eligible for the competition. Please note: Activation may take up to three working days after the project has been submitted for 'change of status'.
The public Voting Phase starts within 2 weeks of the start of submissions and ends on September 29, 2014 at 23:59 (CEST). Please note: Only ideas that have been submitted in full by the end of Submission Phase and comply with the rules and regulations (Guidelines of Startnext and Rules of this contest) will be eligible for entering the Voting Phase.
5. The evaluation panel – the App Decision Board
The 10 most successful (highest funded) app ideas will be presented to BMW’s App Decision Board. The success of each app idea is measured by the total amount of funding at the end of the Voting Phase. The App Decision Board will determine the 3 winning ideas (1st, 2nd and 3rd place).
6. Pre-selection by BMW
BMW will also influence the selection of app ideas. Criteria for pre-selection include strategic fit, degree of innovation and pre-existence of the idea at BMW, among other things. In some cases, an idea may already be in development at BMW. However, detailed information will not be made public due to reasons of confidentiality.
7. Other information
Participants who attempt to manipulate the contest in any way to increase their chances of winning (e.g. by creating multiple user accounts or engaging in other unfair methods) will be excluded from the contest without prior warning. Funds that have been gained by these methods may be subsequently withdrawn. Startnext and BMW reserve the right to take legal action in such cases. The decisions of BMW and Startnext will be final. At any given time, the rules and conditions of this contest may be adjusted, extended or terminated.
